Restoration Begins on Reading’s Historic Pagoda

Renovations have started on Reading’s Pagoda on Mount Penn, aiming to restore and modernize the 117-year-old landmark while preserving its cultural and architectural significance. The project, under Mayor Eddie Moran’s direction and supported by City Council, is funded by $3 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and over $1.7 million in city investments. Key upgrades include repairs to the exterior stonework, installation of new LED lighting, restoration of roof and floor tiles, and enhancements to heating systems, fire protection, and ADA-compliant restrooms. Scaffolding will surround the structure from May 31 to early October, and the Pagoda’s traditional lighting will be temporarily turned off starting June 1 for electrical upgrades, with plans to relight it on December 25.
