Developer Reveals Plans for Former Glidden Site in Reading

Developer Alan Shuman has unveiled ambitious plans to transform the former 14-acre Glidden Paint factory site in north central Reading into a new neighborhood shopping center. The project, currently seeking city approvals which could take up to a year, is envisioned to include three buildings offering approximately 170,000 square feet of retail and commercial space, featuring restaurants, a grocery store, and various businesses. Construction is slated to begin in 2026, with the first building potentially opening by 2027. Beyond commercial growth, Shuman hopes the development will create 500 to 700 local jobs, fostering new opportunities for the community. Local leaders, like Jeremy Zaborowski of the Berks County Industrial Development Authority, highlight the site’s strong infrastructure and workforce as key advantages for its long-term success.
