WalkWorks Program Awards $30,000 to Improve West Reading’s Walkability and Biking Paths

West Reading has secured a $30,000 state grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s WalkWorks program to develop an Active Transportation Plan. Over the next year, the borough will collaborate with planners to gather data and public input to design safer, more accessible routes for walking and biking. The plan aims to improve local pedestrian, bicycle and transit networks, connecting neighborhoods, businesses and parks. Supported by the Pennsylvania Downtown Center and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), the initiative highlights the connection between transportation planning and public health. By creating more activity-friendly routes, the borough hopes to reduce chronic disease, boost physical and mental well-being, and support the local economy.
