Pennsylvania is investing $184,519 into five Berks County nonprofits through the Food Recovery Infrastructure Grant (FRIG) Program to combat hunger and reduce environmental waste. Organizations including Helping Harvest, Opportunity House and the Berks Latino Workforce Development Corp will use the funding to purchase critical equipment such as industrial freezers, refrigerators and specialized vehicles to safely store and transport recovered food. This initiative aims to divert a portion of the 1.6 million tons of edible food currently sent to state landfills, turning potential waste into a vital resource for families in need. By strengthening the infrastructure of local food banks and soup kitchens, the state is ensuring that fresh and wholesome food reaches the community more efficiently while reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
